Cultural competence is the ability to understand, communicate with and effectively interact with people across cultures. It is about behaviors and attitudes to build understanding between people, to be respectful and open to different cultural perspectives, and work towards equality in opportunity. Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to: • Define cultural competence • Describe the relevance of cultural competence in the health care and business environments • Describe the customer-based and organizational benefits of a culturally competent workforce As we move toward a workforce that’s more representative of our diverse world, don’t miss this opportunity to learn how you can develop an appreciation for and an understanding of the many perspectives, experiences, cultures, and references that comprise this landscape.

Monica Holiday-Goodman, RPh, PhD



Dr. Monica Holiday-Goodman is Associate Dean for Student Affairs and Diversity and Inclusion at The University of Toledo College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. She received both a BS in Pharmacy and a PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the former Northeast Louisiana University, presently The University of Louisiana at Monroe.
Dr. Holiday-Goodman’s teaching and research focus on the socio-cultural, behavioral and administrative aspects of pharmacy practice and health care in general. Her research passion is the elimination of health disparities and barriers to care for underserved patients. She has been an invited speaker to numerous academic and professional audiences.
Dr. Holiday-Goodman is actively involved in service to The University of Toledo and the surrounding community. At the University, she is committed to increasing the enrollment and retention of under-represented minority students in the health professions programs.
In the community, she serves as Health Education Outreach Coordinator for St. Martin de Porres Catholic Parish. She is also a member of the Toledo Chapter of the Links, Inc., where she is actively involved in the Health and Human Services facet.
Dr. Holiday-Goodman is grateful to share a vibrant life in Toledo, OH with supportive husband Patrick, and three uniquely wonderful children, Larkin, Faith, and Gideon.

    Special Announcement: As previously shared with our community, NOHRA continues to monitor the evolving factors related to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, particularly with regard to our 2020 Inclusion conference. Among ongoing developments, a new Ohio coronavirus order extends the mass-gatherings ban until July 1, which has contributed to our decision to move the Inclusion conference completely online, on Tuesday, July 21. We look forward to having you join us for this fully-online event.

    As we move Inclusion 2020 completely online, we look forward to offering you the same vibrant programming, impactful networking, and opportunities to reflect and connect over the important and relevant topics in our field. The virtual conference will include our regular offerings and opportunities for engagement, including expert speakers, live chat, inclusion panelists, virtual yoga, and a virtual scavenger hunt.

    About the Program: An inclusive work culture promotes innovation, productivity, happier employees and diversity. In his opening keynote at the 2019 Inclusion Conference, SHRM President & CEO Johnny C. Taylor, Jr. echoed these same benefits as he shared five truths in order to achieve real inclusion in the workplace:

    Prove the presence of respect. This means embracing the notion that every person counts and their rights, opinions and differences should be acknowledged. Identify ways to incorporate individuals with disabilities into the workplace. Mr. Taylor noted that over half of HR professionals have never participated in disability inclusion training. Therefore, companies looking to recruit and hire persons with disabilities should provide training on ADA, discrimination issues, and inclusive behavior. Cultivate inclusive managers. True inclusion does not happen without managers who promote inclusive cultures. Inclusive managers know how to foster collaboration and tap into people’s creativity. They also hire for talent, not just a resume. This can be achieved by broadening your talent practices. Examine your practices at all stages of talent management and identify particular elements in your company processes that function as entry points for bias. Develop resilient cultures that are built to last through transitions. HR can play a role in building resilient cultures by emphasizing relationship management, team member connectedness and communication. Evaluate your personal biases. What do you find unacceptable in people? Do you prejudge an individual based on his or her membership or affiliation with a particular group? Do these biases create barriers to productive relationships?
